The thicker than usual 3/8 diameter and 53 foot length is the type of reata that would be used for roping cattle vs. Thinner (from pencil thin to around 7/16 diameter) and shorter (in the 40 foot + range) reatas typically used for roping horses. Remember, all the strands of a reata are cut from a single hide for uniformity and consistency.
So, a 6 strand reata would need a much larger bull hide than a 4 strand; and a 6 strand reata would be shorter than a 4 strand reata braided from the same hide. Almost all reatas are 4 plait; which are the most commonly encountered, by far. 6 plait (strand) reatas are rare, seldom seen and rarely offered for sale.
I would say that you will see 50 four plait (strand) reatas for every 6 plait reata. It is also much more difficult to cut 6 uniform strands from a single hide, and braid them with uniform tightness to create a braided rope, honda and end tail. The fancy braided rawhide honda at the end is about 4 1/8" long x 2 1/8" wide x 3/4" thick at the burner; and is secured to the reata tightly by a large 1 3/4" long x 1 1/4 wide fancy hand braided chevron pattern rawhide knot. The honda (loop) is affixed with a burner; i. A rawhide piece folded over and hand stitched reinforcement to allow the rawhide rope to slide more easily through the honda, and prolong the life of the honda.
The end of the reata is inserted through the bottom of the large knot, and finished off with a small Turks head knot that acts as a stop and secures the honda to the end of the reata; yet allows it to slightly swivel while in use. Near the end where the braiding stops, the maker braided the strands at the end to finish off the reata using a Rattlesnake braid.
A nice naturally aged rawhide color is desirable and adds authenticity and value due to enhanced eye appeal and originality. Rawhide dries out over time and the strands typically become less flexible.
Some reatas found in barns and hanging for decades in one position become permanently fixed in their shape. This reata bends when flexed, and as expected, has stiffened slightly over time which is another characteristic that is expected and desired with natural aging, has been properly stored, and retains it's eye appealing uniform circular loop pattern. If desired, one can use conditioning on the reata with rawhide dressing that will make it slightly more supple by retaining the moisture in the rawhide, and may also slightly enhance the color. However, this piece is in as found condition that collectors prefer. This heavy duty reata has a nice shape, color, a fancy honda, an extra long length and 6 tail strands; and should look great used as a wall hanger, displayed over a saddle horn, or strapped onto a saddle. He and his brothers all served in WWII and were very active in the American Legion.
